In one earth shattering moment, Sheldon Henry Stottz’s near perfect life is changed forever. The influenza epidemic of 1918 had already taken many lives, but now it had resulted in the untimely death of his wife, Lila and their newborn, Rose. In what seemed like a single breath, the people Sheldon Henry loved the most where gone, and his rock-solid faith shaken to the core. Why was God letting this happen? What had he done to deserve such agony, such utter pain? "I've always been faithful." he thought, "I have always believed."

Just when he thought things could not get worse, they did. At the graveside service of his beloved family, Sheldon Henry is suddenly arrested on suspicion of being a German spy. "This can't be happening." he thought, "Not here. Not now."

Still in shock over the deaths of his beloved family, he is ripped away and immediately transported to a military prison for questioning.

"Why God?" "What have I done to deserve this?" "Is this a test?" "Is there something you are trying to teach me?" "Have I done something wrong?" "Tell me, Father, please tell me."

In the days that follow, Sheldon Henry is tested to the limits of his personal and spiritual endurance. His confusion over what has happened, and the isolation of prison, only amplify his unbearable sense of loss. He dreams of Lila. Her voice. Her tender touch. She is always on his mind even though he knows she is gone forever.

Shortly after his release from prison, Sheldon stumbles upon a young woman in tears. She's deeply broken, and while trying to offer some comfort, Sheldon suddenly realizes that God has spared him for a purpose; a purpose he would perhaps soon understand.

Chasing Rainbows edition by Janice Lee Lynette Chambers Religion Spirituality eBooks

A first book brings a lot of fear to the author(s) that it will not be received. This is the new book I will now give to all persons in my acquaintance who have lost a loved one, either child, parent, or spouse. This book is very readable and it is easy to follow the story line. It is complex in the way it handles the history of German families in the US during the late teens of the last century. It is a prelude novel to World War 1. The loss of many neighbors and family members during a flu plague is covered with much empathy. I will reread this book frequently. It sticks in your memory, and for this reason, it stands apart from many books I have read over the 3 years of my own grieving processes.

This is one of those books that you think about when you're not reading it. The characters are likeable and believable and it leaves you anxious to hear more from Sheldon and his family. Would love to see a series of books about the other family members as well.
I thought I would enjoy this novel. Unfortunately, I visited the author's Facebook pages. I cannot support a "Christian" writing team who are un-Christian in their public persona. May I add that the writing was trite, the plot predictable and the language unchallenging.
This book was mediocre to horrible. I'm on the fence between 0 and 1 stars, but I'm going to go with 0 stars, because no one should support an author that supports racism, inequality, etc. while claiming to be Christian. Also, a recommendation for the authors edit, edit and edit!!!!
At a recent book convention, I met the authors, Lynette Chambers and Janice Lee. They were enjoyable to talk to, and I had to pick up a copy of their book. Not only is the cover classy looking, but the write-up on the back sounded intriguing. After reading the first two chapters, I was hooked.

"Chasing Rainbows" is set in days right after the First World War, in 1918. Suspicion of German spies runs rampant, as does influenza, and families are being torn apart by sickness and death. Sheldon Henry is in one such family. His pregnant wife is on her deathbed, and he is struggling to make sense of it all, calling upon God for answers even as he stands strong for those around him. The authors do a great job of making him empathetic and showing the family bonds, without resorting to Sheldon giving lots of teary-eyed displays. The only problem is that they do spend half the book giving us flashbacks and funeral arrangements. It's all well written, but we need the spy issue to enter the story sooner, much sooner.

Yes, Sheldon gets accused for being a German spy, due to his Germanic heritage and his pacifism which keeps him for fighting with American troops. It's yet one more tragedy, but also a chance for him to show his mettle and his faith. It doesn't actually have much point in the plot, and I hoped for quite a bit more from this angle of the story. Nevertheless, it captures the fear that Sheldon would face in this situation, a fear many Americans did endure during that time period.

"Chasing Rainbows" is an evocative and emotional tale that hearkens back to a century ago, making the characters believable and likable. Although it has the many misspellings and errors one expects in a self-published book, the layout looks great, and someone obviously put a lot of time and care into this. The writers showcase some smooth narrative and nice dialogue, and it is a faith-building story without being cute or trite. Nicely done, ladies!
Wow. I can't remember the last time that a book filled me with so many emotions! I cannot imagine ever going through a tragedy of this magnitude. I do not doubt that many Christians during this time questioned God's purpose for the widespread loss and grief. In that sense, this book seemed like a very realistic depiction of the devastation caused by the influenza epidemic of 1918.

The authors were able to seamlessly flow from one character's perspective to another to essentially give reader a 360 degree view of the story, without the plot feeling disjointed. Each of the characters were memorable for one reason or another, but this particular story was centered primarily on Sheldon Stottz. After losing his newborn daughter and beautiful wife literally within hours of each other, Sheldon begins struggling with the divine purpose behind his immeasurable heartache. That alone would be enough to shake a person to their core, and the family's despair felt palpable to me. However, Sheldon's trials were only beginning.

Being of German descent and open about his uneasy feelings about the war, Sheldon is accused of being a German spy and is subsequently arrested - immediately after the funeral of his wife and daughter. During all of this turmoil, Sheldon questions where his life should go from there, and even contemplates leaving home and starting over. But soon after Sheldon is released from prison, he meets a person who may be able to show him that life is still worth living, and that he still has a purpose.

It is fairly obvious that this is a self-published book, and there are some grammatical errors throughout the text, but they certainly do not take anything away from the story. I try to be a little less critical of self-published works, but overall this was a very beautiful story. The fact that this is "Christian fiction" may tempt you to automatically dismiss this book, but you honestly shouldn't. Yes, this book deals with a man's struggles with his faith, and religion is a major part of these characters' lives, but if you rule out the possibility of reading his novel simply on that basis then you are really going to miss out on this little-known gem.

Disclosure I received a free copy of this book through Goodreads First Reads.
Chasing Rainbows is one of those books that makes you wish you had the next one to read as soon as you finish this one. I can hardly wait to read what will happen with Shelden and his family next. It will make you think about how quickly things could change in your own life. Great read!!
This is a really good book series, the next one was good too but the ending of both of these books leave u looking for more so hope Lynette and Janice get the third one out...love them and the ladies (authors) are really great ladies too
