It's apparent from other reviews that they don't read the fantasist Leiber's original works. They seemed to be expecting the same sort of book that Burroughs would have written. it's not and was not intended to be. What we have is a logical extension of Tarzan into the future. Tarzan changed over of the course of the series.Leiber did more than just novelize a script(by Claire Huffaker I believe), he turns this into a TARZAN novel.
Tarzan is called to Central America by a friend to hep a small boy that had wandered out of the jungles wearing a medallion of gold and talking about his home in a lost valley. It excites the wrong people and soon an army led by a man in a tank is looking for it to loot it of it's gold. And slaughter anybody that gets in the way.
I liked it.

Tarzan and the Valley of Gold edition by Fritz Leiber Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews
I have just bought this Tarzan no.25 by Fritz`Leiber.
I have to say that this book is totally different to the book that Edgar Rice Burroughs wrote on Tarzan!
It is too tedious and explaining too details on all the not important things.
Although the story is very good, but reading this boook is very tiring!
Fritz Leiber's version of Tarzan is very well done. Leiber successfully brings Tarzan into the modern day... well, the modern day as of 1966. The author did his homework, and Tarzan fans should appreciate all the shout-outs to Tarzan's past. While this is loosely based on the movie of the same name, the book is much better.
This is a novel adapted from the Tarzan movie by Fritz Leiber. Many fans find this to be an excellent read, but I think it is way too heavy on description. The opening chapter with Tarzan in the bull ring is excellent, however, the rest of the story is plodding. Leiber researched this story to the nth degree, then put everything he had found into the story, which makes for slow slogging through the Brazilian jungles. This is Tarzan as James Bond as was the 1966 movie starring Mike Henry.
Fritz always was a canny writer, and this is exceptionally good for a movie adaptation.
Tarzan as a jungle trained martial artist, and general big problem solver worked in 1965, we got a true extension of the Edgar Rice Burroughs hero in this.
I'm going to buy the DVD ...
Fritz Leiber was the greatest writer ever to grace genre fiction - in this novelization based on an apocryphal Tarzan movie, he shows his world-class character building and the quality of his writing, going well beyond the requirements of the project, and producing an excellent novel all around.
This was the first Tarzan novel published after the death of Edgar Rice Burroughs, and ERB himself would have been proud of it.
Highly recommended (just like anything else by Leiber)
I love this book. Leiber captures the essence of the character like only Barton Werper and ERB himself have done before.
The film (starring the devilishly handsome Mike Henry) is good also. But this novelization NAILS it.
